“ Because non-English speakers are integrated, they have the same opportunities as other children”

Signs for Success teachers

Communication is the theme that links all aspects of the curriculum. Sign Language is the most fundamental form of communication there is. The focus of Signs for Success is the literacy development of young children. However, once teachers have learned basic signs, they use them across the curriculum—in science, maths., geography and history. Sign is tailor-made for developing children’s concepts. Take, for example, "hard" and "soft." Or, "past" and "future." How about "near" or "far away," or "adding" and "subtracting." Signing provides visuals that make intrinsic sense in each of these pairs of opposites.

The Signs for Success programme fits into:

  • The literacy curriculum.
  • Modern foreign-language teaching.
  • Curricula in maths, science, geography, history, P.E., music.

Signs for Success also contributes to:

  • Supporting the inclusion agenda.
  • Personal and social health agendas.
  • Encouraging the different ways that children learn, whether they be multi-sensory or kinaesthetic.
